Breaching the Gap Between Graduation and Full-Time Employment
Team Megabuild
In Namibia lack of work experience has proven to be one of the greatest obstacles faced by graduates while applying for full-time positions. Even though the graduates have the correct qualifications, work experience always seems to be the deciding factor between being hired or not. Thus, we have taken the initiative to support newly graduated Namibian students by enabling them to gain critical work experience with our Graduate Program. Over the years the program has proven to be a key stepping stone in breaching the gap between graduation and full-time employment.
I applied for the Graduate Program because it offers me a great way to apply the knowledge from the classroom to real-world experience. The program is not only helping me to gain experience but also to increase my marketability. - Basen Ditu
After the 6-month program, each graduate will not only have gained an in-depth insight into the working world but will also stand a chance at being offered a permanent position at one of our 18 branches or one of our other business subsidiaries. Even if a permanent position is not available, graduates would have set themselves up for success by improving their own CV and therefore, broadening their employment opportunities.
The graduate program started in 2019 and has seen not only increased with growth in participants but also in job diversity. For 2021 we took in our highest number yet, a total of 25 graduates, due to an ever-growing increase in interest and applications. The program takes place every year with applications opening in October, just in time for the new intake of graduates in the following year. Our current graduates are based in the following towns:
So far, the journey has been rewarding. I not only feel like I have learned a lot but also that I have made valuable connections for the future. - Aunne Shooya
This year we have taken a hybrid approach to the program. During the previous years, all the graduates would usually rotate to different positions in their branch, but now only 75% of the graduates are rotating while 25% are focusing on a specific department. This has been done to take graduates who have specialised in a specific field into account and to therefore allow them to gain in-depth insights into their own specific field. This year 36% of the graduates are completing their program in Windhoek while the remaining 64% are spread out amongst our other branches.
The distribution of the 25% of specialising graduates have been placed in the following departments:
However, the opportunities do not end there as we have numerous other departments in line with business and commerce related qualifications that can also be utilised, such as:
Our next intake for the graduate program is for the year 2022. The applications will open in September 2021 and more information will be shared closer to this. Stay tuned to our social media channels and visit our website for more information! You could be the next young and fresh talent in our company.
My journey so far is great. I have learned so much in these past months within every department and every situation. I have made mistakes but I have definitely learnt from them. I love being a part of this team and wake up every morning, positive, full of energy and ready to make a change at the company. - Michael Thom
